CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 30 -- Relief was written all over Richard Zednik's face after he scored his first goal of the season Monday.

Little did the veteran right wing know his night was about to get even better. He tallied again, and assisted on a goal, to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames at Pengrowth Saddledome.

"I felt great tonight," Zednik said. "It's a [relief] to get the first one. After the first goal, I got another one and almost got a third one."

Dainius Zubrus also scored twice, Alex Ovechkin set up a pair and Olie Kolzig made 37 saves for the Capitals. Calgary got goals from Kristian Huselius and Jarome Iginla and 27 stops from Miikka Kiprusoff.

The victory concluded a four-game road trip against the Northwest Division that began with a bang and ended the same way for the Capitals, who went 2-1-1, earning five of a possible eight standings points. Monday's performance contrasted with their weak effort two days ago in Edmonton, where they were shut out, 4-0.

"It was a great trip," said Ovechkin, who had a game-high nine shots. "We lost in Edmonton because we play in Vancouver and don't have time to take day off. We play hard against Calgary. We check, we shoot the puck, we control the puck. It was our game."

The loss to the Oilers resulted in several lineup changes. Coach Glen Hanlon scratched struggling defenseman Steve Eminger and put Zednik on a line with grinder Boyd Gordon and enforcer Donald Brashear.

"Sometimes you make changes and they work, and other times they don't," Hanlon said. "Tonight was one of those nights when it worked. . . .

"Sometimes when you go into the game on a line when you are not expected to score, maybe you relax a little bit," he added, referring to Zednik. "And that's what happened."

The changes, and perhaps a day off between games, made a big difference for the Capitals, who got off to the trip's best start. Although the first period was scoreless, with the Flames holding a 9-8 edge in shots, the Capitals had the home team on its heels.

Calgary struck first, in the second period, taking a 1-0 lead on the goal by Huselius, who beat a screened Kolzig with a long wrist shot at 6:50.

Zubrus brought the Capitals right back. After Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr whiffed on a clearing attempt in front, Ovechkin tapped the puck back to Zubrus, who faked Kiprusoff then beat the goalie with a high backhander.

They weren't done. Zednik's first goal came at 15:54 of the second on a wrap-around. His first attempt was stopped by Kiprusoff, but he jammed the rebound in to give the Capitals the lead for good at 2-1.

Zednik's second score came at 10:27 of the third period and put the Capitals ahead, 3-1. Ovechkin sprung Zednik on a breakaway and he beat Kiprusoff between the pads.

A miscue helped the Flames get back into it. A poor pass by defenseman Shaone Morrisonn was picked off by Flames center Jamie Lundmark, who tapped a pass ahead to Iginla. The Calgary captain finished the play by firing the puck between Kolzig's pads, cutting his team's deficit to 3-2 with 7:50 left to play.

"What really impressed me was the way we played after Iginla got the second goal and made it 3-2," Kolzig said. "They had one more shot, and it was from well outside. That showed me that we still had confidence and that we weren't panicking."

Kolzig, and an empty-net goal by Zubrus in the closing seconds, made sure the Capitals stayed ahead.

The victory was special for Capitals rookie defenseman Mike Green, a Calgary native who was skating in his home town for the first time as an NHL player. He had about 60 friends and family members in attendance.

"Wish granted," Green said with a big smile. "We knew this would be a tough swing. To get five points, I think we reached our goal."

Capitals Notes: Eminger was joined in the press box by forwards Rico Fata and Jakub Klepis, who also were healthy scratches.

Richard Zednik netted his first two goals of the season, ending a 12-game skid that dated back to Apr. 13, 2006, when he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens. It was his first goal in a Capitals’ uniform since Mar. 7, 2001 at Pittsburgh.

After the Caps were shutout 4-0 in Edmonton on Saturday, Zednik was shifted to a line with Donald Brashear and Boyd Gordon. Those two players collected assists on Zednik’s goal. For Gordon, it was his first point of the season and his first point since Jan. 31, 2006.

The trio had a strong shift in the Calgary end, cycling down low and winning battles along the wall and in the corners. The shift culminated in Zednik’s first goal. Even when Zednik was struggling to find the net in the season’s first 10 games, he was still an asset on the ice in the eyes of the coaching staff.

“And with Zed, we’re so happy [with him],” said Caps bench boss Glen Hanlon after the team’s Monday morning skate at the Pengrowth Saddledome, and hours before the winger’s two-goal performance against the Flames. “When goal scorers don’t score, the first thing they do is start to cheat on their defensive habits. Zed has been a very conscientious guy. He has killed penalties, he has stayed in the zone, he has blocked shots. That’s the reason why we’re still happy with his play.

“It’s unfortunate that he hasn’t scored; we want that. But he’ll play in enough offensive [situations] tonight to score and his minutes likely won’t be cut back. We’re just hoping to create some offense from [Matt] Pettinger now in that spot. That was my [thought] process.”

Hanlon did not cut Zednik’s minutes back. He went into the game averaging 17:31 a night; he played 17:06 against the Flames.

Shoane Morrisonn also picked up his first points of the season. He matched a single-game career high with two assists on Monday in Calgary.

when Dan and I dressed up as pirates for a halloween party - we went all out.

Other costumes that I remember - senior year - my mom made me a cat outfit. When I was like 3, I had a cat outfit too, and I remember it just itching like crazy - it had like fiberglass fibers in it - a bright orange color.

One of Dan's best costumes was as a rocker - he looked just like he was from a hairband.

We went to an early dinner at Outback last night. We walk in and who is there - our old roommate - Brian and his wife, Lisa.

I think I've might have talked to Brian once since he moved out. Not that we ended on a bad note, he was just going through a lot at the time and we added to the problem when we asked him to move out. We were already married and it was time for us to live on our own. One of the problems was he was dating Lisa, who was married at the time - still living with the husband and with 2 kids - and Brian was having some depression issues - gee could it have been because you're with someone who is married?

We went over and talked to them after placing our order. He mentioned a couple of times that they were celebrating their anniversary and got us caught up - living in Berryville, driving for UPS, had a kid. Basically, no changes. I knew about the married and kid part from another UPS driver. Brian didn't seem any different.

Dinner was really good - we had a great waitress. We went to Dairy Queen afterwards for Blizzards.

At first I was just going to use it to connect with people I know, or groups that I liked, but I think it's time to make new friends. I found a "Richard Zednik" on there and added it as a friend then someone sent me a message, because he saw me on the "Richard Zednik" page. So we've e-mailed via myspace a couple of times today. Come to find out he's a big Zed fan and likes a lot of the same music as me.

I'm still going to just put fun stuff on the website - I just don't trust myspace - it seems way to easy to hack.

Well - yesterday didn't go exactly as planned.

Dropped the Jeep off - They wouldn't accept the "coupon" we had for the brakes. Which was ok - since it was a "settlement" claim not a real recall.

Then I went to the ice rink. When I was pulling in, I noticed that there were no cars where the players parked. Bad sign. Got in there and NO one was around. I called Dan and asked him to check the website - no practice today. Darn it all - I was all set to get autographs of Zed and Ovie.

Then to Walmart - I forgot to get the oil changed until I was half way through my shopping. $250.00 later - I'm out the door with the majority of the items on my list. Somehow I ALWAYS spend over $100 at Walmart! The highest priced items were my 4 pairs of pants - I really needed some pants.

Then home, lunch, and then chill. Obviously, I overdid it because my back started hurting. Not as bad as the night before - thank god. So just watched TV and got on the computer the rest of the day. I watched "Must Love Dogs" on Cinemax. Quite the chick flick.

Oy - what a night. About 3 p.m. yesterday, I got a back spasm. It wasn't too bad until I got home.

I went to the chiropractor right after work - which I thought would help - it made it worst. I could NOT move. Luckily, I still have a few prescription muscle relaxers! That seemed to help, but I still didn't sleep too well.

I'm trying to stay relaxed this morning. I've got things to do today.

Countdown to my weekend - I'm MOD on Sunday, so I'm off tomorrow and Saturday. I'm trying to keep motivated to make it 2 1/2 more hours.

Tomorrow is jampacked. Need to get up tomorrow and take the Jeep in for 2 recalls - the heated seats and brakes. Then at 12 noon is Caps practice. I told Dan I would bring his PS2 NHL 2007 game with me in case I can get Ovie to sign it. I'm also going to print off a picture of me and Zed in case I can get him. The Caps have been on fire - they won last night against the Panthers - 5 to 2.

Then it's off to Walmart - the list is LONG and hopefully while I'm there I can get the oil changed on Plankton (our GREEN Nissan Sentra). That will be the day for me!

By Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Semin was supposed to be the second scoring threat, the complementary player who would deflect some of the defensive attention away from Alex Ovechkin. Through two games, however, Semin has been anything but secondary.

Last night, Semin recorded his first career hat trick and Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals, who, in their home opener before 16,622, defeated the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, 5-2, at Verizon Center.

"I don't rate them one and two," Coach Glen Hanlon joked, referring to his young Russian wingers. "After I thank God at night for having a great wife, I say a quiet prayer for having those two guys on my team. Olie usually gets in on that one, as well."

Capitals goaltender Olie Kolzig was also spectacular, stopping 25 shots. His counterpart in the Carolina goal, Cam Ward, made 30 saves.

Semin, playing in his first regular season game in Washington since 2004 because of a nasty two-year-long contract dispute, scored the Capitals' first, second and fifth goals. Dozens of hats rained down onto the ice after his power-play tally in the final minutes. The 22-year-old also scored against the Rangers in the season opener Thursday.

"It's very nice that I scored in my first game back in Washington," Semin said through a interpreter. "I scored three goals tonight, but I could have scored more."

Ovechkin, who recorded a career-high 15 shots on goal, broke a 2-2 tie 8 minutes 4 seconds into the third period with a wrist shot from the side boards. Then, 4:59 later, he extended the Capitals' edge to 4-2 by redirecting defenseman Brian Pothier's slap shot.

Right wing Chris Clark, whom Hanlon put back on Ovechkin's line after it struggled in New York, assisted on both of Ovechkin's goals and one of Semin's.

"They are the Stanley Cup champions, but tonight, in the third period, we dominate," Ovechkin said with a smile. "Everybody play together tonight."

Ovechkin escaped a potentially serious injury in the final minutes. After he smashed Carolina star Eric Staal from behind, Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason stuck out his leg, making contact with Ovechkin's left knee and upending the Capitals' left wing. Ovechkin stayed on the ice for several moments before skating off gingerly. He returned moments later.

"I'm lucky," Ovechkin said. "I don't know what happened, but he play not fair. I just have move and he hits me."

Semin's first goal of the night came at 12:38 of the first period. Clark corralled a loose puck near center ice and zipped a pass to Semin, who waited until Carolina defenseman Anton Babchuk skated between him and the goaltender. With Ward screened, Semin unleashed a slap shot through Ward's pads from the top of the circle to send the Capitals into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.

But Washington's lead didn't last long. At 1:40 of an unpredictable second period, Carolina's Andrew Ladd, on the power play, redirected Gleason's slap shot past Kolzig to knot the score at 1.

Hurricanes defenseman Niclas Wallin made it 2-1 at 5:21 with a wrist shot from the sideboards. Kolzig appeared to be screened by two teammates and a Carolina player.

For a while after Wallin's goal, it appeared the Hurricanes were about to blow it open. But then Semin decided he wouldn't let them.

Semin made it 2-2 at 9:11. He skated slowly through the circle, sidestepped a Carolina defenseman, froze Ward with another fake, then whipped a shot over the goalie's catching glove.

Although Ovechkin did not score in the second period, he certainly made his presence felt, launching seven shots on Ward. At one point, after Ward thwarted another of his shots, Ovechkin dropped to his knees and rolled his eyes skyward.

He didn't have too wait long for his prayers to be answered.

"It's unbelievable," Clark said of Semin and Ovechkin. "Those guys are a dream come true for this organization. We've got Olie to stop the pucks and we've got them. They're going to chip in a goal almost every game between the two of them."

Oh - what a weekend.

Saturday's game was GREAT! We had a blast. The team looked great. There's just a different vibe this year between the team - even in practice - having fun and having the chemistry.

Yesterday, the wedding went off without a hitch. It was an ALL DAY affair though - Out the door by 10 a.m. and FINALLY home by 6 p.m. I might have had too much to eat or too many different foods yesterday, because I woke up in the middle of the night sick. I though I was going to throw up. Today, I still have an upset stomach.

Dan's meeting the family today for breakfast and to say bye to everyone. Then he has a list of honey-dos to do - mostly things we didn't get done this weekend.

I had a scare this morning. Babe and I were in our usual routine this morning. This includes her being on the bed, waiting for a pounce. Well - I turned towards the drawers and she must of thought I was getting her a pounce - she got a little too close to the edge and fell off. Let me just say, cats (at least older cats) don't always land on their feet. All I heard was a thud, turned around and all fours were up in the air. I immediately picked her up and put her on the bed. She acted like nothing happened. She did bite me when I picked her up, but I think it was because her belly was wide open and she hates to have her belly touched.

So begins the week. Hopefully, today will be quiet at work.

0 Pageviews Well - not much going on yet today.

We didn't get up until 11 a.m. and have just been sitting around since then - and it's 1 p.m. Soon we'll have to get up and around. WOOHOO - HOCKEY! There is supposed to be a fanfest before hand, but the weather sucks, so it might be canceled. We'll see. The game starts at 7 p.m. and we'll be heading to Chipotle beforehand.

Today, we had an estimate done for glass block windows put in our basement. I've always wanted them since we moved in - I hate going downstairs at night and having nothing over the windows - they are just little windows, and no one should be in our backyard anyway. The cost - about $900. It's a good investment. We are FINALLY doing stuff around the house - 4 years after moving in! LOL!

Now if only we could get the patio done.........

Oh - it's been busy around here. I'm trying to keep my focus on working, but get so drained that I can't.

I didn't leave work until 6:30 last night and then crashed in front of the tv - of course, "Lost" was on at 9 p.m. so that was a highlight.

This weekend isn't a 3 day weekend for me. Westfield doesn't believe in Columbus Day - or Vetern's Day for that matter! We've got a busy weekend planned - hockey on Saturday with lawn work during the day and then Dan's sister's wedding on Sunday. Dan's excited because Dallas will be on TV, so the plan is to be home by 4 p.m. for the game.

Back to work........
