I keep thinking about 2007 resolutions - should I make them, should I make them public?

I always think it's good to have goals, but sometimes I over do the goal and make it unattainable. Or I don't know how to look at the goal one step at a time. Or I have too many goals - too much to do and it's overwhelming.

How do I balance it?

Yesterday went well - no one too drunk, a lot of laughing and just hanging out.

EVERYONE loved the food - Both Dan and I were wondering if they would like it or not and we think they were too - BUT EVERYONE enjoyed it. We received so many compliments.

They even enjoyed the cookies - I think Cindy (Dan's stepmom) put it best - they look like Twinkies - and I added - 2 lb Twinkies!

After dinner, we showed everyone the WWE show and then it was air hockey and Guitar Hero.

Pictures will be added later. Parker was the official photographer. He did a great job.

After every one left, Dan and I opened presents. He apologized over and over for not ordering my jersey in time - it should be in about 5 weeks. He did good with the CDs though - OK GO, Gwen Stefani, Evanscence & Fergie. All the CDs I wanted.

Dan and I had fun last night at the musical. It was definitely NOT what we expected.

We expected acting and singing - it was more of a dance interpretation of Billy Joel's music. There's a little synopsis in the playbill that gives the story and if you don't read that first, then forget it, you are lost.

Afterwards, we walked to the National Holiday Tree since it was only 2-3 blocks away. It was crowded, so we didn't go around and see the state trees, but got some pictures of the national tree and the White House.

I finally got the picture of my sign! There are two signs that we ALWAYS pass when we come home from a hockey game ROSSLYN and CLARK STREET. They are right next together so if you change the two letters in Rosslyn, YOU GET MY MAIDEN NAME! So I'm going to try to play with it and with the magic of the computer, I'll have my sign.
The Worst Present I Ever Received Was...

I think it was for Christmas (it might have been for my birthday) - Dan got me a toolbox. Yes, a toolbox to hold all of my tools in because he was tired of digging through a box that had my tools in it. LOL.

He's lucky that I just chalk it up to a inappropriate gift.

After I posted, Dan called and said that he had cleaned and moved the tables around - so when I got home last night, almost everything was in place.

Today, we spend the day cleaning, went to Chipotle for lunch, and then Party City and Giant for last minute items for tomorrow. Came home and got some of the food ready.

In about an hour, we'll be leaving to go see Movin' Out. Today is the last night they will be in DC. Dan's the Billy Joel fan, but I've always liked Billy Joel. Maybe we'll be able to see the National Holiday Tree too since we'll be right there.

Today is the big eat all you can day - we are having lunch brought in by one of our tenants and then we are having our office holiday dinner after work. I know - the lunch was scheduled first and then the boss decided to schedule our dinner the same day. I doubt I'll even be hungry at dinner time! But you know, I'll eat!

We had some excitement on our street last night. I was on the phone with Dan and I could hear the sirens going off and I told him that it must be a big accident or something. The next thing I know - THE FIRE TRUCKS ARE ON OUR STREET! Right in front of our house with lights pouring into our house. The fire hydrant is across the street, right in front of our house. The house 7 doors down from us had something going on. The firemen were running out with their axes and the hose was prepared, but never turned on - luckily. It makes you think though - if one of our neighbors catches fire, our house will too - they are so close together. Time to really work on the house inventory list.

Yesterday at work, we were told our increases and bonuses. I got a 3% increase and a 8% bonus. Not bad.

We had a blast last night at WWE Raw. We were on the first set of risers off of the floor probably about 20 rows back from the ring. We had a wrestler walk by us too - I got a picture of that and MAYBE we were on tv - Dan taped it, so we'll see.

I was going to work on christmas cards tonight, but I'll probably end up going to bed as soon as I get home. We didn't get home until 12:30 or so. 6 am came around fast.

Pictures will be posted later.

*******

3 p.m -

I just got back to the office and there was a message from Dan - he watched the tape of last night's show and who does he see - ME! LOL! Hanging out taking my picture of the westler walking by.

Rated "R" for revenge By Noah Starr December 18, 2006

Raw rolled into Washington, D.C. with so much excitement, the show had to be three hours long.

On a shocking episode of Raw, Team Rated-RKO delivered what may have been not only the fatal blow on DX’s chances at New Year’s Revolution, but also on the storied careers of Triple H and HBK. Thirsting for revenge and seeking the upper hand for their upcoming pay-per-view match-up, Randy Orton and Edge decimated their bitter rivals. A double RKO on Michaels and a steel chair to Triple H’s skull left DX beaten, bloodied and motionless as Raw went off the air.

Earlier, in the biggest Battle Royal in Raw history, 30 Superstars were pitted against each other for the opportunity to face John Cena for the WWE Championship. One by one, powerful competitors were eliminated over the top rope. Shawn Michaels seemed to have the victory all wrapped up, but Edge stood alone in the end, picking up a controversial win—and the chance to capture more gold later in the evening from Cena.

Edge seemed sure that he would defeat Cena and go on to face Umaga at New Year’s Revolution. The Rated R Superstar put up a valiant effort as he faced John Cena for the WWE Championship, at points nearly getting the pinfall against the Champ. When the referee was knocked out, both Randy Orton and DX got involved in the incredible match-up. When the dust finally settled, it was Cena who retained his gold.

At Armageddon, Joey Mercury suffered a severe injury when a steel ladder hit him in the face, sending him to a local medical facility with a broken nose. Melina blamed The Hardys for Mercury’s injuries, and demanded they compete in a 3-on-2 Handicap Match pairing Johnny Nitro with the World’s Greatest Tag Team.

Jeff Hardy endured an extensive amount of punishment at the hands of both Nitro and the World’s Greatest Tag Team. Johnny Nitro finally pinned the current Intercontinental Champion, who has not been in top form after a series of grueling matches-- including a devastating encounter with Umaga last week on Raw. As WWE fans chanted “Nitro sucks!” Johnny Nitro continued to pummel Jeff Hardy after the bell rang. This loss doesn’t bode well for Hardy who will face Nitro in a Steel Cage Match with his title on the line at New Year’s Revolution.

Victoria continued her rampage through the ranks of the WWE Divas, defeating current WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James in a non-title match. Mickie’s name was the last to be checked off Victoria’s list, and the two beautiful competitors will meet at New Year’s Revolution with the title on the line.

In other Raw action, Carlito faced Chris Masters attacking the Masterpiece before the bell rang. The Caribbean Superstar lost his trademark cool after Masters applied the Masterlock to Torrie Wilson last week. Carlito seems to care deeply about Torrie, and his attacks on Masters were nothing short of devastating. The Masterpiece finally fled the arena after slamming Carlito’s head into a camera.

Ric Flair suffered a loss at the hands of Kenny Dykstra. When the nature boy tried to congratulate the talented newcomer, Kenny snubbed him and walked out of the ring declaring, “I’m the real man around here!”

Jim Ross spoke to K-Fed, who will face WWE Champion John Cena at the first Raw of 2007 live from Miami. Federline told the crowd, “I never back down from a challenge.”

Also on Raw, Jerry “The King” Lawler spoke with Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone about his film Rocky Balboa. WWE fans were introduced to Vladimir Kozlov, a Russian Mixed Martial Arts Sambo champion, and JTG and Shad of Cryme Tyme were up to their old tricks, making off with the President’s wallet.

Usually at work, I go to www.gotradio.com and listen to music. Not anymore - blocked. I'm sure it's to help to bandwidth, but still, I enjoy listening to music while I'm working. Good thing I have Itunes on my computer. Time to bring in some more CDs.

Dan and I baked cookies yesterday. We had bought cookie mold sheets where you just put the batter in and it takes the shape - yeh - we decided that we just are not talented this way. The cookies didn't show the shapes (definition) they were supposed to. Then we TRIED to decorate them. Yeh - no talent in that department. Neither one of us had ever done it before, so they look like kindergartners did them!

Tonight is the big RUMBLE! Dan's all excited. It should be fun, but I KNOW I'm going to be tired tomorrow.

I could not believe the game last night - 6 SECONDS into overtime, Ovie scored and we won! It was awesome.

So, I've been working on downloading and creating a Guitar Hero soundtrack for Mae (and it's ending up with Dan too). Well, it figures, I find a band I like! It's so 80's hair band music. I LOVE IT! Bang Camaro - I'm thinking of downloading the whole CD (7 songs).

Another Throwdown?

When the Capitals and the Thrashers last met, the game ended with multiple fights and punches exchanged. Suspensions and fines resulted for players and coaches, and the incident sparked a new Capitals spirit. Since, the Capitals have fought in four of their past five games, so will tonight's rematch in Atlanta be . . .

By Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Post Staff Writer

Friday, December 15, 2006; E01

A promotional video on the Atlanta Thrashers' Web site provides the predictable primer for tonight's game against the Washington Capitals. Set to dramatic orchestra music, fighting highlights from last month's 4-2 Thrashers victory flash across the screen in slow motion, along with the words: "10 fighting majors . . . 7 game misconducts . . . 3 suspensions . . . Be there for the rematch."

Whether the expected sellout crowd at Philips Arena witnesses another round of bloody fisticuffs remains to be seen. But this much is clear: The Capitals, with 16 fighting majors over the past three weeks, are gaining a reputation as one of the NHL's toughest teams.

"I never tell anyone not to fight, and I never tell anyone to fight," Coach Glen Hanlon said. "We finish our checks, we play hard, we work hard and sometimes when that happens, the other team takes offense to it. If you have John Erskine and Donald Brashear in your lineup, you are likely going to have some fighting majors in there."

To be exact, the Capitals have 19 fighting majors this season, tied with the Phoenix Coyotes for third most in the league. That, after ranking near the bottom of the league with only three fighting majors through the season's first five weeks.

Only Anaheim (33) and St. Louis (22) have been penalized more for fighting.

The Capitals' players and coaches contend there has been no conscious effort to fight more frequently. But they didn't apologize for their behavior, either.

"Because we play physical, we get some guys pushing back," said Brashear, an enforcer who is one of hockey's best fighters. "That gets the emotions going. And we care for each other, so things happen. If one guy is in trouble, we are all in trouble."

Such a scenario is precisely what precipitated everything on Nov. 22 at Verizon Center. On that night, rookie defenseman Mike Green was targeted in the final minutes by a bigger player with a history of dirty play.

Atlanta's 6-foot-6, 245-pound defenseman Andy Sutton lined up Green, 6-1 and 208 pounds, along the boards. A player previously suspended for head-hunting, Sutton attempted to deliver a devastating hit to Green's head but instead landed only a glancing blow.

Frustrated by blowing a 2-0 lead and angered by Sutton's attempted dirty hit, the Capitals decided they had seen enough.

With 1 minute 2 seconds left in the game, three fights broke out simultaneously, highlighted by Brashear pounding Vitaly Vishnevski and opening a bloody gash on his head.

Two more erupted in the final seconds. Meantime, the coaches -- Hanlon and Atlanta's Bob Hartley -- exchanged verbal barbs across the Plexiglas separating the benches. Hanlon pointed at Hartley and flapped his arms like a chicken while Hartley mouthed the words, "Next time." The screaming continued in the hallway separating the teams' locker rooms.

In total, 176 penalty minutes were assessed between the teams.

NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell acted swiftly. He suspended Brashear, a repeat offender, for three games. He also doled out one-game bans to Washington's Brian Sutherby and Atlanta captain Scott Mellanby, each of whom was assessed instigator penalties. Hartley was fined $10,000 while Hanlon was slapped with a record $30,000 fine, the most ever assessed to a coach for an on-ice incident.

It's been 23 days since that memorable encounter. Nerves are still a bit raw. And it won't take much for tempers to flare up again. But as several players pointed out, it's just as likely nothing will happen.

Sutton is out indefinitely after undergoing ankle surgery last week, and another Atlanta combatant, Brad Larsen, is expected to miss the game because of an upper body injury, leaving the Thrashers with only one designated fighter, Eric Boulton.

Also, two standings points are simply too valuable for these teams. The Capitals are trying to keep pace in the playoff race while the division-leading Thrashers are under intense pressure to make their first postseason appearance.

"I always expect something," Brashear said. "But usually when you expect a lot of things like that, sometimes nothing happens. With the game the way it is nowadays, it's not like how it was before. Before, you knew something was going to happen. You knew when you go to their barn, they are going to dress some tough guys. But now they suspend you if you get an instigator, so it's hard to retaliate."

Asked if he was disappointed Sutton will be unable to play, Brashear said: "I certainly would have had my eye on him. Guys are harder to intimidate because of the rules now."

Brashear then flashed a menacing smile and added, "But I can still find a way."

Erskine agreed.

"A lot of times, there's a lot of hype for these games," he said. "They say there's going to be a lot of fights and it's going to be physical. And a lot of times, nothing comes out of it. But who knows? I guess we'll have to find out."

Hartley told reporters in Atlanta: "For us, every game is so important. It's business as usual for us and we need to play good hockey. Our focus is on winning the game. As business people, we have to look at our sport. Look at the [Steve] Moore incident in Vancouver. We should learn our lesson. There's a kid out of hockey, lawsuits everywhere, black marks all over our sport. We don't need this."

Tensions had begun building between the Southeast Division rivals last season. First, the Thrashers won, 7-3 and 8-1, on back-to-back nights in October. Then, the Capitals eliminated the Thrashers from playoff contention on the season's second-to-last day.

There's also the fact that division teams play eight times. The NHL wanted to foster rivalries through familiarity, and it's certainly working in this instance.

Although none in the Washington locker room could explain exactly why there've been more fights in recent games, they were all in agreement about one thing: They like what it says about them.

"I love the way we're playing now," captain Chris Clark said. "We've got that little edge. It's exciting."

So, my second favorite hockey player is Peter Bondra - I knew that he was out as a free agent and wasn't signed by anyone. I was happy to see the following today.

*****

Bondra scores first of season, 499th of career; Blackhawks beat Blues 3-2

Canadian Press Dec 13, 2006, 12:37 AM EST

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The early part of the season was family time for Peter Bondra while the five-time all-star healed from a groin injury and waited for the right situation.

Soon after he landed with the Chicago Blackhawks , his 499th career goal helped spoil the debut of new St. Louis Blues coach Andy Murray in a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night. "There's so much excitement for me the last couple of days," Bondra said after his first game of the season. "I don't even think about the milestone. "I was afraid I would change the chemistry of the team, but I guess we took it well and thanks to all the guys who helped me."

Bondra had 21 goals and 39 points in 60 games for the Thrashers last season, nursing a groin injury at the end. During his down time in Washington, D.C., he helped his daughter choose Georgetown for college, and said he needs to get in better condition.

"I'm definitely not in game shape, but I'm pretty close," he said. "A couple of games will make a difference."

Radim Vrbata had a goal and an assist in a three-goal flurry against Marek Schwarz , the Blues' first-round pick in the 2004 draft who made his NHL debut. Schwarz stopped his first 17 shots before the Blackhawks scored three times in a span of four shots over 2:04 early in the final period.

Two of the goals came on the power play for Chicago, which entered in a 2-for-60 slump over 13 games. The Blues are among the most penalized teams in the NHL, ranking 26th, and Murray told his players after the game that they need to cut down on mistakes.

"We have to kill penalties at the start of the third period when we wanted to take the game to them," Murray said. "Discipline has to certainly be a point we address."

Christian Backman had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who have lost eight in a row and earned only one standings point in the skid. They're last in the NHL with a 7-18-4 record and 18 points.

They've also lost six in a row at home and folded in this one after a strong start under Murray, who got a multi-year contract Monday on the same day that Mike Kitchen was fired. Doug Weight beat Nikolai Khabibulin on a deflection off his stick and skate with 1:27 left to cut the gap to one.

"I saw some things we did well and some things we need to work on, obviously," Murray said "I saw some great efforts and I saw some players that I think need to give a little bit more."

The Blackhawks are getting the jump from new coach Denis Savard, going 5-0-3 since he replaced Trent Yawney, that the Blues hope they'll receive from their change to Murray. St. Louis has been outscored 22-9 during its home losing streak.

"We're excited about where we're going," Weight said. "We've got to get there sooner or later, obviously."

Marek, 20, got the chance to play because the Blues' top two goalies, Manny Legace (concussion) and Curtis Sanford (groin) are out. Murray's other big change in his first game was using veterans Bill Guerin and Keith Tkachuk on the penalty kill.

Penalties on three Blues veterans - Weight, Tkachuk and Jay McKee - opened the door for the Blackhawks in the third.

Bondra, who signed a free-agent deal with the Blackhawks on Sunday, scored his first goal of the season during a 5-on-3 power play at 3:22 of the third. Vrbata got his sixth with another man-advantage goal 30 seconds later, beating Schwarz between the pads from the left circle.

"We've struggled all year (on the power play) so I'm glad our guys came through to get us a win," Savard said. "We've got some pretty good tools now. Bondra's a good threat."

Jeff Hamilton scored his sixth on a one-timer from the slot at 5:26.

Backman scored on a rebound during a power play at 15:18 of the second period to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Khabibulin, starting for the 12th time in 13 games, made 19 saves.

Notes: Martin Rucinsky has an assist in each of the last four games for St. Louis. ... Schwarz was the Blues' first first-round pick to play in an NHL game since Backman in 2003. ... Vrbata has four goals and three assists in five games against the Blues.

My husband is a closet WWE fan. He won't admit to people (except me) that he tapes it EVERY night. At least he knows that it's acting/real in getting hurt! He calls it his "soap opera" I'll even sit and watch a match every once in a while - just because I'm amazed at some of the stuff that they do. I loved watching "Tough Enough" on MTV.

Anyway, about a month ago, I saw that RAW was coming December 18, so being the good wife that I am, I asked Dan if he wanted to go. SSUUURRREEE! So, I got the best seats possible - which was like not that close to the ring at all and this was about 2 hours after they went on sales.

About 2 weeks ago, we got a call that the time had been moved up to 7:30 p.m. (from 8 p.m.) No biggy. TODAY, I got back from a meeting and Dan had left me a message. "I just wanted to let you know the reason why they moved the time up - it's going to be a 3 hour show and the first part is going to be 30 guys in the ring and the last guy in the ring goes after the championship - OH THE EXCITMENT IN HIS VOICE! LOL! It was funny. Anyway, it'll be an exciting show. I know he enjoys this type of match when he sees it on TV - just wait until he sees it in person!

0 Pageviews Well - talk about luck! This has been a good week. First, Stephanie and I completed the crossword puzzle (our daily lunch tradition - if we take a lunch). Our accounts receivable call went well and we actually got a "good job" from the VP of our division. AND THEN TODAY -

I decided I was going to go to Goodyear before work and get the emissions done on the Jeep so I could go back to the DMV and get my plates. I get there - only one car in front of me - cool - it won't take long. No problems, done in about 10 minutes. Go to pay for it and the guy behind the counter was looking at my keychain with the Caps logo on it. This usuallly happens there and I said "it's Capitals". Usually the conversation goes into hockey, etc., but I said, "yah - my original license plate has Caps on it, but I lost it, that's why I'm here to get the emissions test" He looks at me, and leans over and PULLS OUT MY LICENSE PLATE! I basically scream - 'THAT'S MY LICENSE PLATE!"

I asked, "did it fall off when it was serviced here?" He said that someone had found it in the parking lot and brought it in. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! Someone must have hit the front of the Jeep while it was sitting there overnight and broke the license plate holder because that was the only thing that was broken - the plastic cover was fine.

I tell you - I have angels looking out over me! So, tomorrow, I need to go back to the DMV and tell them that I found my license plate and MAYBE get my money back. I doubt that part, but might as well try!

This will be the first year without Helen to prepare the traditional Christmas Eve dinner - and only 2 times in my life have I not be with Helen for Christmas. Luckily, Dan has been professionally trained by Aunt Helen to prepare the Christmas Eve dinner.

We never really talked about the "Italian traditions" in our family and now that I research it on the internet I see that we have the Caprarulo twist on them.

We always have 13 items on the table. I found out that it's because 13 is lucky in Italian culture and also because it has to do with the religion - the 12 apostles & Jesus. We always had fish/seafood on Christmas Eve. Once again, based on religion. Similar to Fridays during Lent.

Along with the fish, spaghetti aglio olio, orange salad, zapala (the Caprarulo spelling for zeppole), and knots (cenci). All with the Caprarulo twist. I found out that the orange salad that I know usually has some kind of fish in it. The zapala & knots (both fried dough) we had during dinner are actually desserts. Zapala is the Caprarulo spelling of zeppole and is usually in a wreath shape with powered sugar on it . Ours were always balls of dough.

We also open our presents on Christmas Eve. I can remember "Santa" making a special early stop so that I could open my presents at Helen's before we went to church at 7 p.m.

This year, Dan and I will continue the tradition and have his family over for dinner. We were hoping that my family would come down, but we're not sure that will happen due to the weather - which you can never predict.

Here we are, Monday again.....

The weekend was full of activity - lunch on Saturday then out looking for tiles for a kitchen backsplash. That's a work in progress - it's tough trying to figure out what to use and then comes the design. Saturday night was the Caps/Sabres game - WHAT A GAME! But poor Zed is out again. Supposedly a groin injury - boy was he in pain! His leg just went out from underneath him and he skidded into the boards. I don't even think he was checked - he just totally lost his balance.

Sunday was breakfast with Suzanne at the Ashburn Firehouse. Then, we hung lights outside and decorated inside (pictures to be posted later).

We also started to plan for Christmas Eve dinner. We are going to invite Dan's family for the traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner - I hope they like fish!

Yesterday was a good day - I had lunch at IHOP with my friend, Michelle, and accomplished getting caught up on the Money Software!

By 9:30am today, I'd gone to the DMV, Best Buy, the bank, and Office Depot. Three out of four were completed tasks! Best Buy and Office Depot had 2 day sales for Thanksgiving, so I stopped at Best Buy first and bought a bunch of $4.99 movies. I wanted to get a 2GB jump disk (for $29.99), but they were out, so headed out to Office Depot. Of course, before the shopping, came the DMV - THE DREADED TASK!

Actually, it went pretty well, since I had a really nice person. She tried her best to help me out, BUT SUPPOSEDLY I have had 3 reissues in one year and therefore, I couldn't easily replace my lost license plate. Now, I say supposedly, because I have no idea where they got the 3 reissues - since we only have 2 cars. It could be because we just got the renewal notice for Plankton. That aside, since we purchased the jeep in August (2004), the emissions test expired in September (required every two years). UUUHHHHGGGG!!!!

So, the solution. I had to get new plates for the Jeep, get the emissions test, go back to the DMV and request a replacement for the original tag. In the meantime, I have to pay $12.50 for the new license plate, $15 - 20 for the emissions, and then for the replacement license plate. Luckily, it didn't take too long there since I got there right when they opened and I had the forms all filled out. I was out of there in like 30 minutes.

Dan's on his way back from Ohio today. He said they would leave somewhere between 10 and 12. That means he should be home between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Until, I'll probably take a nap - 6 a.m. came around too soon this morning!

So, it's Thanksgiving. I've spent the day at the computer doing home office stuff. It's already 5 pm and I haven't taken a shower yet. LOL! That's the nice thing when you're home alone and no plans. Very seldom do I not at least take a shower and dress. Sometimes, you just need it.

Lunch/Dinner was nachos - very good. The usual lunch/dinner when Dan's not around. I watched a couple of episodes from My Name is Earl - Season 1 that I hadn't seen yet. That show is so funny - no matter how many times I seen an episode, I laugh.

Yikes, what a day. I'm glad I'm home. Dan is safely in Ohio. Him and Donna got to Grandma's around 1:30 - they left like 7:30.

I went to Walmart today to finish up the shopping - I forgot - I have ONE more gift - for the boss - I can't figure out what to get her, so a Borders gift certificate it is. I know she always has a list of books to read, so I can't go wrong with it.

So, done shopping, taking the shopping cart back to the corral and walking back to the Jeep I realize - NO LICENSE PLATE. My first thought, MAYBE I got too close to the lawnmower and it got caught on the cover and ripped off. Got home - NOPE. So called DMV - closed until Saturday. Then called the sheriff's department - they said that I would have to fill out a report before going to the DMV. So, the cop came over and he told me differently - I could either do a police report and he'd have to take the other tag OR I could just go to the DMV and see what they say. I picked the latter. I'll see what happens. Worst case, new license plate number. Probably no more personalized license then.

Xmas shopping almost done! WOOHOO!

I have one small present to buy for our "adopted" nephew (Dan's best friend's kid). He's only 4 months, so it'll probably be some clothes to help the parents.

Dan leaves for Ohio tomorrow. I'll be hanging out at home - but I'm looking forward to it. This has been a rough year and I'm looking forward to some time to chill. I so enjoy just hanging out at home and doing stuff around here or running errands. I wish I could just stay home. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen living in this area! So the next best thing is planning on an early retirement. Hopefully that will happen.

So, the plan for the rest of the week, it's just me and Babe. I have a couple of computer stuff planned - I'm still behind from when we had to reformat the harddrive. Then maybe some scrapbooking and definitely cleaning the house!

Yeah - it's Friday. Not a holiday for us.

What a week - it was "car maintenance" week. We used a new mechanic, closer to home - we are now about $1,500 more in debt. The Jeep wasn't too bad - $270 for it's 24,000 mile checkup. The Nissan - a different story - $1,300. New tires, new battery, new hydraulics for the clutch, brake flush, radiator flush, power steering flush - good thing the car is paid for. But still - it's only 4 years old and at 45,000 miles. It's just a baby.... LOL!

A week until my Creative Memories party. Only 5 people so far, but the most important people - Dan's family. They are more into scrapbooking than I am.

Work this week has been crazy - I can't wait to sleep in tomorrow. No big plans this weekend - probably Caps practice on Sunday.

My boss will NOT let it go that I do not vote. She's pissing me off. It's my right and her hounding me about it WILL NOT make me go vote. It will probably prevent me from EVER voting.

She even said "As your boss, I'm telling you, you should vote (she said this to both me and Sandy) and then to me - "Especially you since your husband works for the government."

I don't complain about the government. I don't trust politicians. They say what they want and bash the person they are running against. I hate the telemarketing calls that are recorded and just call the numbers in the phone book - otherwise, they would see that the number I'm at IS NOT a registered voter.

I believe that each person will do what they want to do. To each their own. I don't believe in declawing cats and don't do it to my cats, but don't bash the people who do it (including my boss). I do feel sorry for the cats who don't have a choice. I don't believe in abortion, but don't hate people who have had one. If it doesn't hurt you, why should it matter to you. You don't know what the person has gone through to make the decisions they have made.

0 Pageviews Is it wrong that I don't vote?

Every year the boss says to me - you should vote - it's your right as an American. Isn't it my right NOT to vote also?

I also don't complain about politics. Meaning - I don't choose the person who's making the decisions, I shouldn't complain about the decisions being made.

Why don't I vote - it's all political and the people who are running say what they think you want to hear - or bash the person they are running against. It's a popularity contest. I have my own problems to worry.

I don't mind the growth in Loudoun County - why do you think I chose to live there? Our house has almost doubled in value in 4 years. I made $75,000 on my townhouse 4 years ago. So what if it leads to more traffic - that's what happens with growth. If you don't like it, leave. Same with the overall government - if you don't like it, leave the country. Because of the government, my husband has a job with VERY good benefits.

Maybe if I wasn't happy with the government, I would vote - or believe my vote really counts and makes a difference.

OK - off my soapbox. Just needed to get it off my chest - I just hate it when the boss tries to influence your personal life.

Capitals right wing Richard Zednik missed his second consecutive game with an injury he suffered against Atlanta last Friday. Although the team won't comment on the location or severity of the injury, video replays show Zednik favoring his left arm after a hit late in the second period against the Thrashers. He is officially listed as day-to-day.

So I woke up this morning and no Mark & Kris on the radio on Hot 99.5. Their contract was up at the end of the year and the company made a decision yesterday not to renew. OH - the pain this morning. EVERYONE is pissed, calling into the radio station, but he radio station is doing it right. They explained what happened, which I thought was cool. Not many stations would do that.

It's always hard to find a good radio station in the morning that has the right mix of music and talk and I always enjoyed 99.5 in the past - ever since the radio station first started - with THE Billy Bush (who is now on Access Hollywood).

So, we'll see what happens. Supposedly, they have a new guy Cane that is coming in and currently has a nationally broadcasted show.

Wow - November 1.

The year is flying by. Soon the holidays will start. I have my X-mas shopping planned for the 20th. I have that week off, so I should be able to get the majority done that day. I have less gifts to buy this year since I don't have to buy on Helen's behalf.

Last night was pretty fun hanging out on the porch, handing out candy. We went through almost two 3 1/2 pound bags and 5 snack size namebrand candies. Someone down the street had the music and lights going.

It's not as fun by myself though - maybe next year Dan will stay home. Halloween is his favorite holiday. We were so out of the spirit this year - we didn't even do pumpkins. We usually at least do pumpkins and I toast the seeds (I found a GREAT recipe on Better Homes & Gardens website (www.bhg.com)). At least we had Pillsbury halloween cookies! LOL!

By Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, October 31, 2006; E04

CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 30 -- Relief was written all over Richard Zednik's face after he scored his first goal of the season Monday.

Little did the veteran right wing know his night was about to get even better. He tallied again, and assisted on a goal, to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames at Pengrowth Saddledome.

"I felt great tonight," Zednik said. "It's a [relief] to get the first one. After the first goal, I got another one and almost got a third one."

Dainius Zubrus also scored twice, Alex Ovechkin set up a pair and Olie Kolzig made 37 saves for the Capitals. Calgary got goals from Kristian Huselius and Jarome Iginla and 27 stops from Miikka Kiprusoff.

The victory concluded a four-game road trip against the Northwest Division that began with a bang and ended the same way for the Capitals, who went 2-1-1, earning five of a possible eight standings points. Monday's performance contrasted with their weak effort two days ago in Edmonton, where they were shut out, 4-0.

"It was a great trip," said Ovechkin, who had a game-high nine shots. "We lost in Edmonton because we play in Vancouver and don't have time to take day off. We play hard against Calgary. We check, we shoot the puck, we control the puck. It was our game."

The loss to the Oilers resulted in several lineup changes. Coach Glen Hanlon scratched struggling defenseman Steve Eminger and put Zednik on a line with grinder Boyd Gordon and enforcer Donald Brashear.

"Sometimes you make changes and they work, and other times they don't," Hanlon said. "Tonight was one of those nights when it worked. . . .

"Sometimes when you go into the game on a line when you are not expected to score, maybe you relax a little bit," he added, referring to Zednik. "And that's what happened."

The changes, and perhaps a day off between games, made a big difference for the Capitals, who got off to the trip's best start. Although the first period was scoreless, with the Flames holding a 9-8 edge in shots, the Capitals had the home team on its heels.

Calgary struck first, in the second period, taking a 1-0 lead on the goal by Huselius, who beat a screened Kolzig with a long wrist shot at 6:50.

Zubrus brought the Capitals right back. After Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr whiffed on a clearing attempt in front, Ovechkin tapped the puck back to Zubrus, who faked Kiprusoff then beat the goalie with a high backhander.

They weren't done. Zednik's first goal came at 15:54 of the second on a wrap-around. His first attempt was stopped by Kiprusoff, but he jammed the rebound in to give the Capitals the lead for good at 2-1.

Zednik's second score came at 10:27 of the third period and put the Capitals ahead, 3-1. Ovechkin sprung Zednik on a breakaway and he beat Kiprusoff between the pads.

A miscue helped the Flames get back into it. A poor pass by defenseman Shaone Morrisonn was picked off by Flames center Jamie Lundmark, who tapped a pass ahead to Iginla. The Calgary captain finished the play by firing the puck between Kolzig's pads, cutting his team's deficit to 3-2 with 7:50 left to play.

"What really impressed me was the way we played after Iginla got the second goal and made it 3-2," Kolzig said. "They had one more shot, and it was from well outside. That showed me that we still had confidence and that we weren't panicking."

Kolzig, and an empty-net goal by Zubrus in the closing seconds, made sure the Capitals stayed ahead.

The victory was special for Capitals rookie defenseman Mike Green, a Calgary native who was skating in his home town for the first time as an NHL player. He had about 60 friends and family members in attendance.

"Wish granted," Green said with a big smile. "We knew this would be a tough swing. To get five points, I think we reached our goal."

Capitals Notes: Eminger was joined in the press box by forwards Rico Fata and Jakub Klepis, who also were healthy scratches.

Richard Zednik netted his first two goals of the season, ending a 12-game skid that dated back to Apr. 13, 2006, when he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens. It was his first goal in a Capitals’ uniform since Mar. 7, 2001 at Pittsburgh.

After the Caps were shutout 4-0 in Edmonton on Saturday, Zednik was shifted to a line with Donald Brashear and Boyd Gordon. Those two players collected assists on Zednik’s goal. For Gordon, it was his first point of the season and his first point since Jan. 31, 2006.

The trio had a strong shift in the Calgary end, cycling down low and winning battles along the wall and in the corners. The shift culminated in Zednik’s first goal. Even when Zednik was struggling to find the net in the season’s first 10 games, he was still an asset on the ice in the eyes of the coaching staff.

“And with Zed, we’re so happy [with him],” said Caps bench boss Glen Hanlon after the team’s Monday morning skate at the Pengrowth Saddledome, and hours before the winger’s two-goal performance against the Flames. “When goal scorers don’t score, the first thing they do is start to cheat on their defensive habits. Zed has been a very conscientious guy. He has killed penalties, he has stayed in the zone, he has blocked shots. That’s the reason why we’re still happy with his play.

“It’s unfortunate that he hasn’t scored; we want that. But he’ll play in enough offensive [situations] tonight to score and his minutes likely won’t be cut back. We’re just hoping to create some offense from [Matt] Pettinger now in that spot. That was my [thought] process.”

Hanlon did not cut Zednik’s minutes back. He went into the game averaging 17:31 a night; he played 17:06 against the Flames.

Shoane Morrisonn also picked up his first points of the season. He matched a single-game career high with two assists on Monday in Calgary.

Other costumes that I remember - senior year - my mom made me a cat outfit. When I was like 3, I had a cat outfit too, and I remember it just itching like crazy - it had like fiberglass fibers in it - a bright orange color.

One of Dan's best costumes was as a rocker - he looked just like he was from a hairband.

We went to an early dinner at Outback last night. We walk in and who is there - our old roommate - Brian and his wife, Lisa.

I think I've might have talked to Brian once since he moved out. Not that we ended on a bad note, he was just going through a lot at the time and we added to the problem when we asked him to move out. We were already married and it was time for us to live on our own. One of the problems was he was dating Lisa, who was married at the time - still living with the husband and with 2 kids - and Brian was having some depression issues - gee could it have been because you're with someone who is married?

We went over and talked to them after placing our order. He mentioned a couple of times that they were celebrating their anniversary and got us caught up - living in Berryville, driving for UPS, had a kid. Basically, no changes. I knew about the married and kid part from another UPS driver. Brian didn't seem any different.

Dinner was really good - we had a great waitress. We went to Dairy Queen afterwards for Blizzards.

Well - yesterday didn't go exactly as planned.

Dropped the Jeep off - They wouldn't accept the "coupon" we had for the brakes. Which was ok - since it was a "settlement" claim not a real recall.

Then I went to the ice rink. When I was pulling in, I noticed that there were no cars where the players parked. Bad sign. Got in there and NO one was around. I called Dan and asked him to check the website - no practice today. Darn it all - I was all set to get autographs of Zed and Ovie.

Then to Walmart - I forgot to get the oil changed until I was half way through my shopping. $250.00 later - I'm out the door with the majority of the items on my list. Somehow I ALWAYS spend over $100 at Walmart! The highest priced items were my 4 pairs of pants - I really needed some pants.

Then home, lunch, and then chill. Obviously, I overdid it because my back started hurting. Not as bad as the night before - thank god. So just watched TV and got on the computer the rest of the day. I watched "Must Love Dogs" on Cinemax. Quite the chick flick.

Oy - what a night. About 3 p.m. yesterday, I got a back spasm. It wasn't too bad until I got home.

I went to the chiropractor right after work - which I thought would help - it made it worst. I could NOT move. Luckily, I still have a few prescription muscle relaxers! That seemed to help, but I still didn't sleep too well.

I'm trying to stay relaxed this morning. I've got things to do today.

Countdown to my weekend - I'm MOD on Sunday, so I'm off tomorrow and Saturday. I'm trying to keep motivated to make it 2 1/2 more hours.

Tomorrow is jampacked. Need to get up tomorrow and take the Jeep in for 2 recalls - the heated seats and brakes. Then at 12 noon is Caps practice. I told Dan I would bring his PS2 NHL 2007 game with me in case I can get Ovie to sign it. I'm also going to print off a picture of me and Zed in case I can get him. The Caps have been on fire - they won last night against the Panthers - 5 to 2.

Then it's off to Walmart - the list is LONG and hopefully while I'm there I can get the oil changed on Plankton (our GREEN Nissan Sentra). That will be the day for me!

By Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Post Staff Writer

Sunday, October 8, 2006; E01

Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Semin was supposed to be the second scoring threat, the complementary player who would deflect some of the defensive attention away from Alex Ovechkin. Through two games, however, Semin has been anything but secondary.

Last night, Semin recorded his first career hat trick and Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals, who, in their home opener before 16,622, defeated the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, 5-2, at Verizon Center.

"I don't rate them one and two," Coach Glen Hanlon joked, referring to his young Russian wingers. "After I thank God at night for having a great wife, I say a quiet prayer for having those two guys on my team. Olie usually gets in on that one, as well."

Capitals goaltender Olie Kolzig was also spectacular, stopping 25 shots. His counterpart in the Carolina goal, Cam Ward, made 30 saves.

Semin, playing in his first regular season game in Washington since 2004 because of a nasty two-year-long contract dispute, scored the Capitals' first, second and fifth goals. Dozens of hats rained down onto the ice after his power-play tally in the final minutes. The 22-year-old also scored against the Rangers in the season opener Thursday.

"It's very nice that I scored in my first game back in Washington," Semin said through a interpreter. "I scored three goals tonight, but I could have scored more."

Ovechkin, who recorded a career-high 15 shots on goal, broke a 2-2 tie 8 minutes 4 seconds into the third period with a wrist shot from the side boards. Then, 4:59 later, he extended the Capitals' edge to 4-2 by redirecting defenseman Brian Pothier's slap shot.

Right wing Chris Clark, whom Hanlon put back on Ovechkin's line after it struggled in New York, assisted on both of Ovechkin's goals and one of Semin's.

"They are the Stanley Cup champions, but tonight, in the third period, we dominate," Ovechkin said with a smile. "Everybody play together tonight."

Ovechkin escaped a potentially serious injury in the final minutes. After he smashed Carolina star Eric Staal from behind, Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason stuck out his leg, making contact with Ovechkin's left knee and upending the Capitals' left wing. Ovechkin stayed on the ice for several moments before skating off gingerly. He returned moments later.

"I'm lucky," Ovechkin said. "I don't know what happened, but he play not fair. I just have move and he hits me."

Semin's first goal of the night came at 12:38 of the first period. Clark corralled a loose puck near center ice and zipped a pass to Semin, who waited until Carolina defenseman Anton Babchuk skated between him and the goaltender. With Ward screened, Semin unleashed a slap shot through Ward's pads from the top of the circle to send the Capitals into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.

But Washington's lead didn't last long. At 1:40 of an unpredictable second period, Carolina's Andrew Ladd, on the power play, redirected Gleason's slap shot past Kolzig to knot the score at 1.

Hurricanes defenseman Niclas Wallin made it 2-1 at 5:21 with a wrist shot from the sideboards. Kolzig appeared to be screened by two teammates and a Carolina player.

For a while after Wallin's goal, it appeared the Hurricanes were about to blow it open. But then Semin decided he wouldn't let them.

Semin made it 2-2 at 9:11. He skated slowly through the circle, sidestepped a Carolina defenseman, froze Ward with another fake, then whipped a shot over the goalie's catching glove.

Although Ovechkin did not score in the second period, he certainly made his presence felt, launching seven shots on Ward. At one point, after Ward thwarted another of his shots, Ovechkin dropped to his knees and rolled his eyes skyward.

He didn't have too wait long for his prayers to be answered.

"It's unbelievable," Clark said of Semin and Ovechkin. "Those guys are a dream come true for this organization. We've got Olie to stop the pucks and we've got them. They're going to chip in a goal almost every game between the two of them."

Oh - what a weekend.

Saturday's game was GREAT! We had a blast. The team looked great. There's just a different vibe this year between the team - even in practice - having fun and having the chemistry.

Yesterday, the wedding went off without a hitch. It was an ALL DAY affair though - Out the door by 10 a.m. and FINALLY home by 6 p.m. I might have had too much to eat or too many different foods yesterday, because I woke up in the middle of the night sick. I though I was going to throw up. Today, I still have an upset stomach.

Dan's meeting the family today for breakfast and to say bye to everyone. Then he has a list of honey-dos to do - mostly things we didn't get done this weekend.

I had a scare this morning. Babe and I were in our usual routine this morning. This includes her being on the bed, waiting for a pounce. Well - I turned towards the drawers and she must of thought I was getting her a pounce - she got a little too close to the edge and fell off. Let me just say, cats (at least older cats) don't always land on their feet. All I heard was a thud, turned around and all fours were up in the air. I immediately picked her up and put her on the bed. She acted like nothing happened. She did bite me when I picked her up, but I think it was because her belly was wide open and she hates to have her belly touched.

So begins the week. Hopefully, today will be quiet at work.

0 Pageviews Well - not much going on yet today.

We didn't get up until 11 a.m. and have just been sitting around since then - and it's 1 p.m. Soon we'll have to get up and around. WOOHOO - HOCKEY! There is supposed to be a fanfest before hand, but the weather sucks, so it might be canceled. We'll see. The game starts at 7 p.m. and we'll be heading to Chipotle beforehand.

Today, we had an estimate done for glass block windows put in our basement. I've always wanted them since we moved in - I hate going downstairs at night and having nothing over the windows - they are just little windows, and no one should be in our backyard anyway. The cost - about $900. It's a good investment. We are FINALLY doing stuff around the house - 4 years after moving in! LOL!

Now if only we could get the patio done.........

Oh - the poor Caps - lost their first game of the season. Jagr scored within the first 30 seconds. The good news at home - we have a new TV channel,Versus, which is all sports and the NHL games are on it! WOOHOO!

Oh - it's been busy around here. I'm trying to keep my focus on working, but get so drained that I can't.

I didn't leave work until 6:30 last night and then crashed in front of the tv - of course, "Lost" was on at 9 p.m. so that was a highlight.

This weekend isn't a 3 day weekend for me. Westfield doesn't believe in Columbus Day - or Vetern's Day for that matter! We've got a busy weekend planned - hockey on Saturday with lawn work during the day and then Dan's sister's wedding on Sunday. Dan's excited because Dallas will be on TV, so the plan is to be home by 4 p.m. for the game.

Back to work........

By Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, September 26, 2006; E03

HERSHEY, Pa., Sept. 25 -- Ten days into training camp, this much about Richard Zednik is certain: He's still awfully fast.

But until the regular season gets under way, it's unclear which Zednik is going to show up for the Washington Capitals on game days: the feisty right wing who amassed 50 points for the Montreal Canadiens in both 2002-03 and 2003-04, or the enigmatic one who managed only 30 points last season, then requested a trade because his playing time had diminished.

Coach Glen Hanlon said Monday he's confident the Capitals have the Zednik from a few years ago.

"He's going to get an opportunity here to score," Hanlon said at Giant Center, where the Capitals practiced before heading to Philadelphia on Tuesday for a preseason game against the Flyers. "He's going to be put in all offensive situations. So it's pretty much a given that those [50-point seasons] will be revisited."

Zednik will play on the revamped power-play unit with Alex Ovechkin, Dainius Zubrus, Alexander Semin and Brian Pothier. He also will skate in four-on-four situations, meaning the 30-year-old's playing time figures to increase dramatically from the 15 minutes 46 seconds he averaged in Montreal a season ago.

But perhaps more significantly, Zednik is in the mix, along with Semin and Chris Clark, to earn a spot on the top forward line next to Ovechkin, a left wing, and Zubrus, a center. Zednik would make the most sense in that role -- Semin prefers playing left wing and Clark is more suited for a checking-line job -- but, as Hanlon has said, chemistry is a funny thing.

Hanlon has deflected all inquiries about his line combinations, insisting that he's still tinkering, searching for players who "click."

"You have to balance everything out," Hanlon said. "We'll take a look at [everything]. We still haven't put together our lines. But starting [Tuesday], you'll probably get a better idea."

Zednik was not shy about voicing his preference.

"I would love to play on that line," said Zednik, who played for the Capitals from 1995 to 2001 and was reacquired from the Canadiens in July for a third-round draft pick. "Dainius is a great centerman, and obviously Alex is a great player, too. But we'll see."

Ovechkin also has been intrigued by the possibility of playing with Zednik full time.

"I like play[ing] with him," Ovechkin said. "He's a good player; he shoot the puck good and he gives me lot of passes. Right now, coach is just looking for best lines."

But no matter where he lines up, Zednik is just happy to be out of Montreal, where he did not get along with General Manager Bob Gainey, who took over behind the bench in January.

"It's great to not have to think about all that other stuff and just focus on hockey," Zednik said. "Here, there are a lot of young guys. We are rebuilding, but it's a team on the rise."

*******

Richard Zednik is confident he will be the player who amassed multiple 50-point seasons this year.

Richard Zednik will play on the revamped power play unit with Alex Ovechkin, Dainius Zubrus, Alexander Semin and Brian Pothier.

Well - the computer seems to be up and running again. Still need to load some software, but the majority is on. I might get on it tonight to see how it is.

I'm here at work - I kind of like working the weekend since no one else is in the office and as long as I can keep motivated, I get things done. I have a meeting at 10 a.m. with a tenant and then it's out and about.

Yesterday, we went to the Caps training camp. Richard Zednik was there, so I got a lot of pictures of him. Dan said to me - "there's more than just him on the team....". Once the camera software is back on the computer, I'll get the pictures (and some video) up. I think there might be some problems with the photo share - when I click the link, it says there are no photos, but when I go into yahoo photos directly, all of my pics are there. I've e-mail 360 to let them know.

Still have the computer problems.....

I think we are going to reformat the harddrive this weekend.

What a week - To add to the (Dan's) stress, he's been sick. He stayed home on Wednesday and yesterday, he was getting into Plankton (the Nissan)and pulled out - flat tire. No problem, Merchant's tire is right down the road from us. Pulled out the spare - also flat. So, once I got home, he took the jeep with the two tires up to Merchant's. Luckily - they were able to patch the tire so it only costed like $25.

Oh well - the good thing about this week - we got to see each other!

Today is my day off - working on Sunday. BUT, I have two conference calls - so much for a day off! I'll probably end up doing some paperwork from here after Dan goes to work - I just feel so behind.

oooohhhhhh - computer problems.....

We've spent all weekend working on the computer with no luck. We thought we had a break through when we had the Mcafee tech sign on and get the software loaded, but when we rebooted, even more problems.

I went back to the online tech via my laptop since I couldn't even get to the website on our computer and they directed me to the free tech. The free tech helped as much as possible, but made it sound like we have a virus.

Yesterday, I did some backups and I think we're just going to start over. If we do have a virus, this will be the 2nd one within the year. What a pain.

Saturday was Christina & Kevin's wedding - pictures will be added as soon as the computer problems are fixed. Yesterday, we went to the Caps practice in Ashburn. We only stayed for the 1st half. I read in the paper today that they did a pie in the face to one of the player's who's birthday it was. I have pictures from the practice too. Richard Zednik wasn't there though - Oh well - Saturday will be another chance to get some pictures.

I thought "DaVinci Code" did an OK translation.

Someone did point out to me that the female had a less lead than in the book. I really didn't realize it until then. I think I was more interested during the film on did it stick with the book or not.

I can't think of any other book that I read and then saw the movie. Actually, I read the Star Wars series when I was in middle school, but didn't see the movies until years after that when they were finally played on regular tv. So, I don't remember that translation.

So, I got a call from Dan today saying that he was having problems with the computer. The virus scan isn't working. Who knows why - it was working fine for me on Tuesday night. So, here I am, trying to fix it before we call McAfee and spend money on the call. Dan spend a couple of hours on it (just found out it was 5 hours on it) and even went into work late.

I got to see my old boss, Anthony, today. He was flying out to LA, so he stopped by and chatted with everyone and I walked him out to his gate.

This week (starting Monday), I've been trying to watch what I eat and write everything down with calorie amounts (even if it's an estimate). I'm hoping this will help and so far, so good. I've weighed myself every morning and so far I'm down 1.5 pounds!

By Jane Straus

You’re up at 5:00 a.m. to squeeze in a workout before the phone starts ringing off the hook at the office. A stack of bills sits on your desk at home, waiting for your attention. Your spouse’s birthday is next week and you’ve just found out you have to be out of town on business (again). Meanwhile, at the office, yesterday’s e-mails sit unopened in your computer’s inbox. You decide you’ll just have to skip lunch today to catch up. Oops—you forgot. You have a lunch meeting. Welcome to the new normal!

In the 1960s workers were told that within a very short time, the 40-hour work week would, like the dinosaur and the dodo bird, become extinct. That prediction was correct, except for one thing—instead of American workers having more leisure time, the reality is that most managers today work more than 40 hours, some logging in as much as double that. The big question remains: “How do you achieve a balance between family, friends, community, personal fulfillment and leisure AND fulfill your career goals and responsibilities?”

We’ve all tried to cut down on our busy schedules. But for most managers, this is an exercise in futility. The bigger the change we contemplate, the more overwhelmed and anxious we become. So here is the one strategy you can employ that is guaranteed NOT to stress you out. It is the undervalued art of “tweaking,” based on the idea that sometimes the smallest adjustments yield the biggest results.

There are hundreds of relatively small things you can do that will make you feel more empowered, enlivened and enriched. So take a deep breath, relax and tweak away.

Here are 10 strategies to get you started:

1. Fix what irritates you. Managers spend a lot of time listening to others’ complaints and solving problems. But like the cobbler whose children are barefoot, you may be putting yourself last. What bugs you? Do you have a laptop that chugs along? A cell phone with a ringer that isn’t loud enough? An e-mail program that doesn’t do what you need it to? It’s amazing how taking care of what annoys us can truly make us happier. Splurge on that new, faster laptop. Investing in your satisfaction is always worthwhile. If you change what you can, you will be more able to let go of what can’t be changed.

2. Apply the “80/20 rule” to everything. You’ve no doubt heard the time management maxim that 80% of results come from 20% of efforts. Look at where you’re getting the most results. Then see how you can tweak the places where your valuable time and energy are being used less productively. The first step is to assess your typical work day. Where did you think you would spend time that day? What did you hope to get accomplished? How was your time actually spent? What can you tweak that would make a difference? For example, did you spend too much time answering e-mails? Make a decision to check e-mails on a scheduled basis. This will prevent you from getting caught up in minutiae and help you stay focused on your priorities.

3. Examine ways you procrastinate. Successful managers aren’t perfect but they do look at themselves honestly. Look at your avoidance strategies: dusting the plant leaves, answering e-mail, making phone calls. Then figure out why you are procrastinating on a particular project. Do you avoid projects that take a lot of time? Or ones that are complex? Or ones that you might be criticized for or even fail at? All of the above? Procrastination is a survival mechanism to avoid something we fear. The catch is that the fear actually builds the longer we procrastinate. To break this vicious circle, identify the situations that are most likely to trigger your procrastination, then break down the project into manageable chunks. For example, if you have a huge report to write, spend time each day doing something that will bring you closer to the project’s completion. This can include gathering research, writing the introduction or conclusion first, creating PowerPoint slides or graphs—anything that keeps your toes in the water.

4. Let go of “sunk costs.” This is a psychological term for the ability to stop throwing good energy, time and money after bad. We all hate admitting to ourselves that our time and energy have been wasted. You may be tempted to say, “I put three months into this project so I can’t quit now.” But you will be more productive if you ask yourself, “How likely is it that continuing with this project in this way will yield worthwhile results?” Assess your biggest projects first since they take the most time and energy. Don’t spend one more day doing something that isn’t likely to work, no matter how much more blood, sweat and tears you pour into it.

5. Get help organizing. Most of us would love to save time by moving some of our activities (e.g. paying bills, buying groceries) online. But you may lack the computer savvy and/or the time to set up the necessary systems to make it happen. Consider hiring a virtual assistant who can organize you from anywhere for a contracted period of time.

6. Participate in spiritual, community and family activities. It is easy to lose perspective by getting caught up in the next presentation, make-it-or-break-it career move or pending big deal that will put your organization out front in the marketplace. But balance doesn’t come from working in a vacuum. Become a volunteer and invite your family, even young children, to volunteer with you. This both increases the amount of quality time you spend together and serves as a reminder that you are of value in a many different ways.

7. Take a walk every day. This isn’t to jog or run an errand or to catch up on to do list items. Just five minutes moving your body in fresh air, away from your office, without electronic devices, is bound to reenergize you and give you a fresh perspective. Albert Einstein’s understanding of relativity came to him in a dream, away from his laboratory. There is power in just being rather than in continually doing.

8. Do something different. Scan your newspaper’s weekly events section and find an activity you’ve never done before. If you have a family and you usually attend sports events together, mix it up with music, art or nature. Doing something new will give all of you more to talk about.

9. Interview someone who seems to “have it all together.” Is there someone who seems to be living the life to which you aspire? Ask the person to lunch and find out how he or she successfully blends work, family, community and leisure.

10. Write about your accomplishments as though you’re 80. No one wants his or her tombstone to read “Here lies _____ who completed everything on his/her to do list.” Ask yourself, “If I were gone tomorrow, what would people say about me? What would I want them to say about me?” If there is a discrepancy, use the information to prioritize your schedule. Make a list of your goals and aspirations. Put the list in a prominent place where you can’t ignore it. Then tell someone what’s on your list. Committing to others helps us keep commitments to ourselves. Begin to do today what you want to be remembered for at 80.

If you learn to balance external demands with internal aspirations, you will not necessarily be any less busy, but you will be able to put your daily stresses into perspective and feel the satisfaction of a life well-lived. Feeling reconnected, rejuvenated and rekindled aren’t bad outcomes for practicing a little tweaking, are they?

Yesterday, we went to Luray, VA to Luray Caverns, but didn't go to the Caverns. We went to the garden maze that they have there. Then we went to the Luray Zoo. It was a nice, relaxing day.

Today, I "interviewed" for the Specialty Leasing Manager position. We'll see what happens. At least I know I'm in the running. If I don't get it, that's ok - I haven't mastered the AGM position yet.

We just hung around the house today after my interview. Dan went and played frisbee golf while I was at the appointment and actually met a guy there that said to call him up anytime to play.

Another exciting day in Caps history - their training camp will be at the Ashburn Ice Rink! WOOHOO - right down the road.

8 years ago today - almost to the minute we got married in Vienna, VA . The wedding of our dreams - formal, but fun.

5 years ago today - almost to the minute, we got remarried in Vegas! When in Vegas - you've got to get married! This time it was rock n' roll style.

To celebrate our anniversary, we're heading out to Ruth Chris's Steak House. Neither one of us have been there, but I have heard it has the best steak.

We'll also be heading off to Best Buy to buy Lost Season 2. We might be going to the mall so I can get Dan something. He presented me with my gift today - a pottery dish with cover that has happy anniversary on it with an 8. So cute! It's the little things! I tried finding him something yesterday, but no luck on finding something bronze. I ended up getting my outfits for the 2 weddings within the month (Christina & Kevin (co-worker) and Donna & Bill (Dan's sister)).

WOOHOO - VACATION! I do have some work to do though, but hopefully I can catch up a little.

Tuesday is our 8th wedding anniversary. I found something last night that Dan left hanging around - a receipt from Paint Your Own Pottery - that means that I'm getting a present. 8th anniversary is pottery or bronze. OH NO - I haven't bought him anything yet! He kept asking me if I had gotten him anything and I said no and nothing was mentioned about getting something for each other - I thought we were just going to go to dinner!

I looked on the internet and can't really find anything that I think he might like that is small and bronze. YIKES!

I tell you - I'm keeping him - it's the little things like this that keep it going. I still have the little clock keychain that he bought me for our first anniversary.

PS - he doesn't read this so, I'm safe posting - or at least last time I knew he didn't read this!

Taking a break from work - This morning things keep coming in and NOTHING has gone out.

25 years ago today, Vincent and Joanne got married! Doesn't seem that long! The first wedding I was in. I was always so jealous of my friend Pamela because she was ALWAYS the flowergirl in someone's wedding.

I forgot to mention that last week I went to the chiropractor - it's been like 8 years. Last night, I went again. What a feeling after I get "aligned". I feel so loose and almost faintlike. I REALLY crack too.

Making the 'A' list - Forget resolutions, write what you want to accomplish in life

There's a list people keep folded in some corner of their minds or tucked in a nearby drawer. It enumerates things they want to see, experience or accomplish before some personal deadline or their death.

Different from the obligatory string of resolutions people dutifully make this time of year, "the list" involves more soul-fueling pursuits than losing weight, flossing or spending less time at work.

There's the 127-item "Life List" that author and adventurer John Goddard is said to have written when he was 15. It included exploring eight rivers, climbing 16 mountains, flying a plane, becoming an Eagle Scout, performing 200 sit-ups and learning French, Spanish and Arabic. Nearly 60 years later, Goddard has checked off more than 100 items on the list and has written about his experiences in The Survivor (HCI, 2001, $12.95 paperback). Stephen Lankton, a Phoenix psychotherapist, trainer, teacher and author of 17 books, began his list when he was 10, taking inspiration from his grandmother's short-wave radio and the lyrics from the song You Belong to Me.

He heard the words, "See the pyramids along the Nile / Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle / . . . See the market place in old Algiers," and it occurred to him that there was a world beyond his hometown.

"There is an El Paso, pyramids, Cape Cod. All those things went on my list when I was 10," Lankton says. "I have flown a silver plane and the only thing I haven't done is the pyramids," he says. "It's always been a dream. It's on my list."

This June, he'll check it off when he visits Cairo, the last on his itinerary created from song lyrics.

Arizona author Stella Pope Duarte keeps her list in the form of notes she scrawls and sticks on pages of her journals. They're not places to travel, but pathways to her soul. They goad her to remain true to the best of herself.

Phoenix life coach Marcia Reynolds says that creating lists like these help people tap into what makes their lives rich. In her workshops, Reynolds asks participants to come up with a list of what they'd do if they were given $5 million tax free. The first list usually includes paying off credit cards and mortgages, and taking trips. She then asks them to write what they would do if given another $5 million.

"The next $5 million (list) is really what you want to do," she says. "It gets deeper into what would make your heart sing rather than fill in what's missing."

It's what Queen Latifah's character laments in her latest movie, Last Holiday, when she's told she has three weeks to live: She wishes she had laughed more and feared less.

But coming up with a list that includes running marathons, climbing mountains or traveling to foreign countries won't make your soul soar if it's just an item to cross off a list, Reynolds says.

"It's the pursuit, not the event," she says. "Once you run the marathon, that's done. It's important to focus on who you are being, not just what you are doing."

Psychotherapist Lankton finds that writing a list doesn't necessarily mean it will be any more than words on paper, just like a lot of New Year's resolutions. He points to two things that often keep people from turning words on a list into action: a lack of problem-solving skills and a learned helplessness when it comes to things like goals on a list.

He once planned a trip to Japan with his son to visit the birthplace of aikido and the son of the man who created this martial art. Others studying aikido were enthusiastic about going on the trip. Lankton offered ideas for how they could cobble together jobs, teaching opportunities and other resources to make the three-week trip happen. In the end, only he and his son went.

"It wasn't that they lacked a skill set. I gave them a bunch of ideas. These men aren't failures," he says. "But when it came time to go, they had done nothing to get themselves there."

Problem-solving skills help one figure out how to get to Paris by saving a little every month. Learned helplessness comes from rehashing past failures rather than successes. Change the retrieval system to focus on past successes, says Lankton. A list can be a good mechanism to reprogram that internal memory, he says.

"It can help you retrieve memories of success no matter how small," he says. "The list will be an anchor for these positive experiences."

Sonia Choquette is creating a lifetime of positive experiences. Every New Year's Eve for the past 30 years, she has written a list of what she wants to accomplish in the next 12 months.

Choquette, who lives in Chicago and is author of several books, including Your Heart's Desire (Three Rivers Press, 1997, $18 paperback), finds that this annual ritual keeps her living large and making sure she doesn't wind up at the end of her life having missed it.

Choquette began the ritual at age 16. Her parents introduced her to the value of writing down goals.

She brought the tradition to her own family. Every New Year's Eve, Choquette, her husband and their two teenage daughters take turns sharing their lists and reviewing those they made the year before. The exercise helps the family support and hold each other accountable, she says.

By Dec. 15, there was only one thing remaining on Choquette's 2005 list: creating more time for herself. She had cashed in her frequent-flier miles and taken the family to India. She had raised more than $100,000 from a charity event she'd planned. She had spent time helping a daughter choose potential colleges and she had arranged a couple of husband-and-wife retreats, accomplishing a goal to spend more quality time with him.

"There's one thing of value, and that's time, and it's something we all gamble (on)," Choquette says.

She related a story about a woman who was dying and had realized she'd frittered her life away doing what others wanted.

"She said, 'I forgot to live my life. Who knew I wouldn't have the time?' "

For Choquette, the deathbed epiphany reinforced the value of her family's year-end tradition.

"It's important to have a list of things that really do feed your spirit and transcend the mundane things." Susan Felt

People's lists

Stella Pope Duarte

Duarte, 54, is an author, teacher and speaker.

Where she keeps her list: On post-a-notes and pages of numerous journals.

When she started: Duarte, author of Let Their Spirits Dance (Rayo, 2003, $12.95 paperback), has always written notes to herself. She can't pinpoint a date she started. She uses them to remind herself of what she wants to accomplish in arenas of her life: teaching, writing, health and being a mom.

Why she keeps it: I want to know deep inside of me what it is I want to accomplish. (The notes) are my measuring rods of how successful I have been in accomplishing the things that are my heart. Am I living out my heart? Am I being true to myself?

What's on her list: Like her post-a-note journals, Duarte's "list" isn't a neat 1-through-10 list of items. Much of her list is an internal accounting: Was she present to her students? Did she relinquish old hurts with family members? Is she maintaining her daily walking regimen? Is she letting the story she's writing take her where it's leading, not where she's directing? Is she letting each of her four children be their own person?

Why it's important: They (the notes) are the way I create little pathways to my souls. Words are only words until you live them out. (For instance,) working out daily all these years is a struggle. But you learn how to endure. I've learned how to pursue something to the end and not stop because I'm exhausted. You understand, "Oh, this is endurance."

Kathy Sacks

Sacks, 31, is married and owner of Kathy Sacks Group, a public relations and marketing firm.

Where she keeps her list: I have a piece of paper. It's a running list.

When she started: I started getting serious (about a list) in college. I wanted to tour Europe with friends, and that was a catalyst to write it down. By writing it down, it was something to work towards. I started it when I was 21 or 22, and I went to Europe when I was 23.

What's on her list: The list has expanded from backpacking through Europe to going on a yoga retreat; visiting Australia; touring Europe with my husband; traveling to some third-world country on some sort of aid mission; remastering Hungarian (her first language); write a book; start at least three businesses in my lifetime (she started her firm in March); run a marathon or a triathlon; raise a family of at least two children.

Why it's important: Life goals are important. If I don't write them down and revisit them, it doesn't work. I'm a big believer in checking things off, whether it's a daily list, yearly list or a lifelong list.

I put things on the list randomly when I feel real strongly about something. Once I get something in my head, I'm going to do it. I get restless fairly quickly if I'm not challenged.

Eric Caruth

Caruth, 37, is executive vice president sales and marketing for Primary Financial Services, a husband and father of two.

Where he keeps his list: I know it by heart.

When he started: I started it right before I was graduating (Arizona State University, 1993). I'm an athlete, and in order for you to achieve anything you have to set goals.

Why he keeps it: As a football player at ASU, Caruth was injured during his junior year. It ended his football career and any dream of playing professional ball. "I needed to figure out what I was going to do for the rest of my life," he says. He transformed his list from the number of tackles to graduating from college and getting a job with an annual income of at least $30,000.

What's on his list: He systematically adds goals: an MBA by 30; purchase a house; earn $125,000 a year by age 35; earn more than $150,000 by 38; be at executive level and earn more than $200,000 by 40; be a president or CEO by 43 and be a millionaire; give back to the community.

Why it's important: I don't know any other gauge as benchmarks for achieving goals. When I was done with football, I turned the list into challenging me on a business level.
