Scoring Slovak set to play with Miro and Kozlov

Richard Zednik spent very little time on Long Island before getting right on the ice for the morning skate today at Nassau Coliseum.

Zednik is happy to be in the playoff mix with the Islanders.

"It's exciting to be here with the Islanders fighting for a playoff position," said Zednik. "It's a great opportunity for me to help the team."

So what can we expect from the former 30-goal scorer?

"I like to use my speed and go to the net," said Zednik. "I'm offensive-minded and create chances for my linemates and score some goals."

Added Nolan at the morning press conference: "We did a lot of research on him for a while. He has a competitive nature. Richard's a good team guy and we know how well he's performed down the stretch and in the playoffs. He's very competitive and fits into our system well. Everyone we spoke to on the team that has played with him had nothing but good things to say about Richard."

One player Zednik has some experience playing with is Miroslav Satan. Nolan indicated the two would see time together. Satan and Zednik have played together on the Slovakian national team during a number of international tournaments.

"Hopefully, we'll contribute offensively and score some goals," said Zednik referring to his compatriot." We played together at the World Championship and it was fun. Hopefully, it will continue here with the Islanders."

The 11-year NHL veteran has also had experience playing with Brendan Witt while with the Capitals and Arron Asham when they both skated for the Montreal Canadiens from 2000-2002.

Zednik, who will wear No. 20 played in only 32 games this season with Washington due to injury, but feels completely healthy after returning in the beginning of February.

"I was injured for most of the season," said Zednik, "so I'm happy to be healthy again and am ready to play. I feel fresh and look forward to helping the Islanders make the playoffs."

Islanders get Zednik from Capitals for draft pick

Associated Press Feb 26, 2007, 5:19 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) -The New York Islanders , locked in a tight race to make the Eastern Conference playoffs, added some offense Monday when they acquired winger Richard Zednik from the Washington Capitals for a second-round draft pick in 2007.

Zednik has six goals and 12 assists for the Capitals this season. He has also missed 31 games with wrist and groin injuries.

"Richard is a proven offensive talent," New York general manager Garth Snow said. "When you can add a player with his skill and competitiveness for a playoff push at a fair cost, you do it. We believe Richard will fit in well with our team."

The Islanders entered Monday tied with Montreal for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, although both teams were only six points behind third-place Ottawa.

The acquisition of Zednik could give the Islanders leeway to move forward Jason Blake , who has been the subject of trade rumors. The NHL's trade deadline is Tuesday.

Zednik, 31, spent parts of six seasons with the Capitals before he was dealt to Montreal in 2001. He scored 20 goals three times for the Canadiens, including a career-high 31 in 2002-03. The Capitals reacquired him from Montreal for a third-round pick last summer.

Zednik is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The Capitals attempted to sign him to a contract extension, but general manager George McPhee said the two sides were "not very close" to a deal.

"We discussed it for the last couple of months, and it just didn't work out," McPhee said.

The move could be the first of several before Tuesday's deadline for the Capitals, who have fallen out of playoff contention after a competitive start to the season. McPhee said he first realized he would be a seller rather than a buyer when the team had several injuries during the most compact part of the schedule from Christmas through New Year's Day.

"We lost all five games, and we never recovered," McPhee said. "It's really too bad. The team was having a nice season. We didn't have the depth to survive that."

With the trade, the Capitals have three picks in the first two rounds of this year's draft.

Here it is, Sunday night already!

We have a house guest now, who is currently crashed - playing too much in the snow with his daddy this morning and then with Dan this evening.

We weren't sure if the hockey game was going to happen or not because of the weather - we ended up with a couple of inches of snow and the roads were BAD on the way to the game. Coming back wasn't too bad. We picked up Cash after the game.

I got some good pictures. We were in the second row, but there was no one in front of us. We missed the warm up because of taking our time to get to the game. But right before the game, Scott Gomez (with the Devils) threw a sticker (I think from his jersey) over the glass and it hit me. So during the game whenever he came over I would point at him and yell.

We had a full THREE DAY weekend!

Saturday, we went to Matt & Nicole Ehrie's house to visit and learn more about Cystic Fibrosis and the charity walk (Great Strides). Matt & Nicole's daughter, Grace, has CF and we were just amazed at what medical attention Grace has to go through. Dan and I have walked in Great Strides for the last 2 years and are very excited that this year we can walk with the Ehries. We do whatever we can to support them. When we donated the Isuzu Amigo, we donated it to CF.

On the way back home (Matt & Nicole live near Baltimore), we stopped at Tom (Dan's best friend) & Kat's house. In the past, their daughter, Anabelle, has been "afraid" of Dan - who knows why, but this time, we turned a corner. She was all over him. Sebastian, their son, is getting so big and his own little personality. Dan even held him!

Sunday, was errand day - lunch at Roy Rogers and then shopping at Office Depot and Gamestop, and a return to Petsmart. Then back home in time for the hockey game - and to see Zednik score the first goal for the Caps! Suzanne stopped by later to pick up some stuff. Just full of friends this weekend!

Monday was more errands - Chipotle for lunch, and shopping at CVS, Lowes and then groceries. Relaxed the rest of the day - Dan did a few honey-do things, but we basically relaxed.

We both felt that we accomplished things this weekend or at least got out of the house and did stuff!

We'll be having a visitor next week - Cash, the Ehrie's dog, will be spending the week with us while they go on vacation. We've had Cash before - he's such a great dog (black lab). They were going to put him in a kennel or have someone come and walk him 3 times a day, but we are more than willing to take him. It'll do us some good, just to have some fur around. Dan and I are both looking forward to it. We love that dog!

We have been under sleet since yesterday afternoon. I didn't sleep very well because of the sleet hitting the windows all night - plus worrying about Dan getting home. It took him about 1 1/2 hours last night.

Last night was hard. We received a REALLY nice card from the emergency vet along with Babe's pawprint and some fur. I just started bawling! I needed some of her fur though - I just needed to feel it again. One of these days, it will get easier.

Dan got me a card and a heart box of Reese's peanut butter cups - YUMMY! He knows that's like the only candy I like. I had to make a quick stop at Borders today to get a card and puzzle book. I think we're going out to dinner this weekend and celebrate.

In hockey trading news -

Richard Zednik

Up front, 31-year-old right wing Richard Zednik is healthy and in the last year of his contract. Zednik’s good health, his speed and the three 20-goal seasons on his résumé will make him attractive to potential suitors. It’s possible that the Caps could sign Zednik to a contract extension, but it’s also possible that they’d trade him and then talk to him about returning when the free agency season opens on July 1.

Dan just called me and let me know that my jersey came in - WOOHOO - but then he adds - just in time for him to be traded.

Hockey last night! We were in the 2nd row, 2 seats away from where the Rangers came out.

We had a blast even though the Caps lost. We bought 2 signed pucks and if you picked one that wasn't signed, you got to meet Alexander Semin after the game to sign it. I picked Donald Brashear's puck and Dan got Chris Clark's - BUT before we selected, a lady asked about trading a Richard Zednik puck - of course, I spoke right up - I'LL TRADE! We traded the Chris Clark puck since Donald is my goon.

I got a great picture of my two guys in the penalty box together. Pictures will be up later.

So, the misfortune continues.

Yesterday, the sound went on the laptop at work. Needless to say, I can't stand working without music. So, right now, I have my Ipod shuffle on and one earbud in.

I was supposed to take an adult ed class tonight, but school is closed today because of snow. Probably for the best since I'm coughing a lot today.

Oh well - as the saying goes - "If I didn't have bad luck, I would have no luck at all". Still - I'm staying positive!

Capitals Show Interest in Keeping Zednik

By Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, February 6, 2007; E07

The Washington Capitals have approached Richard Zednik's agent about extending the right wing's contract. Although the sides are not close to reaching a deal, according to David Schatia of Octagon Athlete Representation, the move provides insight into the club's plans for the veteran as the Feb. 27 trade deadline approaches.

Since returning from abdominal surgery three games ago, Zednik has been one of the Capitals' best forwards. On Saturday in Pittsburgh, skating on a line with Boyd Gordon and Matt Pettinger, he was instrumental in shutting down Sidney Crosby, the NHL's leading scorer. On Sunday, Zednik was credited with an assist in the 2-1 shootout win over the New York Islanders.

"They are interested," Schatia said by telephone from Montreal. "We've had several discussions, exchanged ideas, figures and concepts, but nothing has been resolved. I would like to think the [negotiations] are positive."

Capitals management is waiting to see how Zednik performs over the coming weeks before deciding his fate in Washington. The 31-year-old is in the final year of a contract that pays him $1.976 million and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Zednik missed six games in November with a wrist injury and 25 spanning December and January while recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia. When healthy, Zednik has been streaky (five goals and 14 points) but reliable for a rebuilding team that's in need of NHL-proven talent.

The speedy Slovak also has indicated that he enjoys living in Washington and playing for the Capitals, the organization that drafted and then reacquired him from the Canadiens in July for a third-round draft pick.

Schatia declined to divulge specifics of the negotiations but acknowledged that the sides remain far apart. Capitals General Manager George McPhee declined to comment on the contract talks.

If an extension is not agreed upon prior to this month's deadline, it's possible, if not likely, that Zednik will be dealt to a contender, likely for a draft pick. It's not believed that any teams have called the Capitals to inquire about Zednik -- yet.

"It's nothing that people of good faith can't resolve with a telephone call," Schatia said. "The ball is in their court. They know what we're looking for. If he fits into their plans, we'll hear back. If he doesn't, we'll hear something else."

I decided to stay home and go to the doctor's today - another sinus infection. If all the prescriptions that they gave me this time doesn't wipe it out, I don't know what will. I got everything - decongestant, antibotic, nasal spray and something for my cough. I feel better than I did yesterday which is good.

So, just hanging out today and waiting for Dan to come home. He worked days today because he had to take the bureau car in for maintenance.

So - the health has declined this weekend - this morning I woke up with a fever. So much for going to the all you can eat pancake breakfast at the firehouse! I basically didn't get up and around until about 2 hours ago.

I'm feeling pretty good right now, but who knows. I can tell I still have a little fever. I'm watching the hockey game - it's so good to see Zednik playing again. He actually got the first goal of the game, but it was given to Pettinger - who pushed it back in after it came back out. At least Zed gets a point. It's been a weird game - they had to stop play 3 times to replace glass that fell out or broke.

After the game, it's paying bills and then the super bowl at 6. The paper had some boardgame that you can play during the football game, so we might do that. Just to keep us interested.

Thank goodness January is over - I'm hoping that that "bad luck" was just in January and doesn't continue through the year!

January finished with our furnace not working. Wednesday morning I noticed that it was kind of cold in the house and I looked at the thermostat and it read 59 degrees - that's funny, we always have the furnace set at 68 degrees.... so when Dan got up, he tried to restart the furnace, but no luck. So called the HVAC company - of course they couldn't come out until the next day. Wednesday night, I did my best to keep the house warm. I turned on the gas fireplace and got out the electric portable heater - got the temperature up to 65 degrees from 61 degrees.

That night, I brought the portable heater upstairs into the bedroom and the room was a good temperature when I got up in the morning - didn't freeze taking a shower - BUT when I went downstairs - WOW! It was 53 degrees in the house.

Luckily, the tech came like at 9:30 a.m. and $209 later, got the furnace going again. The igniter had gone on it. We also signed up for the maintenance program - seems like something ALWAYS goes on the AC or furnace when it's the hottest or coldest day of the year. It'll be the best $175 we spend this year.

Zednik came back last night - full of energy and they had pre-taped interviews with him - I was screaming at the TV - GO ZED! It was great seeing him on the ice again.

Hopefully that's why my throat is a little sore today and I keep clearing my throat! PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE ME GETTING SICK AGAIN!
